The Green Room

Sustainable Industries recently announced their Top 10 Green Building Products of 2010.  I was impressed by the innovation and ingenuity of all the winning products but there were two in particular that really jumped out at me:

Ultimate Pervious Pavement – With storm water playing such an important role in the LEED certification process, specifically Regional Priority Credits for Hawaii, finding reliable pervious paving products is vital to our community.  Unfortunately, last I heard there were still building code issues that were creating hurdles for using such products.  If you know of any updates to those codes, please share!

AQUS Greywater System – I was in San Francisco last year and stayed in a hotel with a great greywater toilet system.  The AQUS system separates the two just a little further making it more appealing and easier to use since you don’t have to lean over the toilet to wash your hands.

If you’ve heard of any other innovative green products either on the market or on the verge of being released, I would love to hear about them.

And feel free to give me a call at 441-4452 or shoot me an email at shines@honblue.com if you want to know what we’re up to.

Where in Hawaii can I get help on finding out more about greywater toilet systems?

I found BPE’s Energy Recovery Ventilators fascinating. I’ve always wondered why so many people get sick at work. I thought it was the drastic change in temperature when they went from a nice air conditioned office to sweltering heat outside. I didn’t know there were so many pollutants in office buildings and at home that could linger for so long.

@Theo – I’ve done some research, both online and made a few phone calls. So far I haven’t found a local retailer for the greywater systems. I’ll keep this post updated if I do find one.

Greywater systems should be one of the easiest to implement and should be required by code in all news residential buildings. It is puzzling why this has lagged so far behind.

@George – I’ve heard similar frustrations from within the AEC community. Not specific to greywater systems but in response to how codes in general can’t seem to keep up with some of the more proven sustainable products available in the marketplace. I wonder if we’ll ever see the roles reversed. Codes that actually encourage builders & designers to demand greater efficiencies from manufacturers and suppliers as opposed to getting caught in the middle of the clients demands.
