@Joe – thanks for stopping by to check out the sight and for the feedback. Donating outdated prints to after-school programs is a great reuse option - well done! If you ever have more materials than the young artists can use, feel free to drop them off with us and we can either reuse or recycle them at our home office in Iwilei. Thanks again!

Very cool commentary. This issue is beginning to get traction, finally. The fact that there is a finite number of gallons of oil is being accepted as true.

One small thing that I have been doing for years is donating my old blueprints to after-school care programs. They all love it for art projects!

@George - I've heard similar frustrations from within the AEC community. Not specific to greywater systems but in response to how codes in general can't seem to keep up with some of the more proven sustainable products available in the marketplace. I wonder if we’ll ever see the roles reversed. Codes that actually encourage builders & designers to demand greater efficiencies from manufacturers and suppliers as opposed to getting caught in the middle of the clients demands.

Greywater systems should be one of the easiest to implement and should be required by code in all news residential buildings. It is puzzling why this has lagged so far behind.

In regards to urban gardening, I saw the most innovative composting method at a friend's house recently that worked in a very tight urban space! I always thought you needed a lot of space to compost and some expensive equipment to do it right, but after seeing my friend's trashcan composting system, I began researching it online. Here's one source that explains how it's done: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Sustainable-Farming/1976-09-01/The-Underground-Composter.aspx

Food scraps make up a significant portion of landfill space (around 20% from some figures I've read), and that doesn't have to be the case. Even with a small amount of space, you can turn your food scraps into fertilizer! Imagine if we could reduce landfill waste by 20% just by this simple act.

@Theo – I’ve done some research, both online and made a few phone calls. So far I haven’t found a local retailer for the greywater systems. I’ll keep this post updated if I do find one.

I found BPE's Energy Recovery Ventilators fascinating. I've always wondered why so many people get sick at work. I thought it was the drastic change in temperature when they went from a nice air conditioned office to sweltering heat outside. I didn't know there were so many pollutants in office buildings and at home that could linger for so long.

I've been wanting to try something like this for a while. Here are some sites I found interesting:

It looks like Green Hands of Aloha has some specific indoor gardening options and knowledge.

Agreed Barbara! And we face that specific challenge in almost every aspect of our lives here in Hawaii. That’s why thinking about how and why we make our choices is so important. Buying local whenever possible is a great start. Feel free to share any ‘gems’ you’ve found around town!

Good point Shannon. While I am not an angel with saving water (I love my showers), and while I often forget my cloth grocery bags, I always try to buy local when I can. If a local choice is available on Oahu, I will find it. This obviously pertains to food, but also I try to avoid online shopping as much as possible and try to purchase from a local store. While sometimes cheaper in the store, the amount of fossil fuels used to ship produce from Mexico, CA, or Asia costs us much more in the end. And why not support local businesses? Amazon.com is starting to scare me, they are overtaking the market!
